EnergyPlus is building energy simulation program that engineers, architects, and researchers use to model energy use in buildings. Modeling the performance of a building with EnergyPlus enables building professionals to optimize the building design to use less energy. It builds on the most popular features and capabilities of BLAST and DOE-2 .

It does the heat load calculation effectively by using Heat balance algorithm which takes into account transient heat conduction through opaque surfaces by using conduction transfer functions Released in April 2001, the program was developed jointly by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Illinois, the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, GARD Analytics, Inc., Oklahoma State University and others, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs.
